Which genres of music will the ADJM work with?

Parts of the method will work with any genre or style. Other aspects are genre-specific and work best with house music, including particular subsets of house music that DJs play in these venues.
Don’t hesitate to contact us if you would like to discuss this in more detail.

When I learn the ADJM, is this the only way to play going forward?

The ADJM as a whole is applicable in the types of venues that you will be visiting. You will learn skills in three categories:
  • Foundational skills, which are helpful all the time.
  • Venue-specific skills, which are useful in these types of venues.
  • Genre-specific skills, which are helpful when playing the genres of music played in these types of venues.
It is up to you to decide how you use the skills and when.

Does ADJM guarantee work at venues?

By enrolling in the ADJM, we can only provide the opportunity to learn the method, which is what we know these venues are looking for DJs to have mastered. Your success in learning and integrating this method into your style and music selection is up to you.

What can I do if I don't meet the requirements?

The ADJM is a masterclass for DJs who have gone beyond the initial phases of their learning. Therefore, we consider each application individually, and we will have a one-on-one discussion with all prospective students before accepting an application.
We offer prep classes to students who need to develop their skills to the point where they are ready to take the full ADJM. Just apply via the registration form, and we will arrange it if necessary!

Do you offer any payment terms?

Once you are accepted, the tuition must be paid in full at least one week before the start of the semester.

What are your COVID policies?

Each student will be expected to take a self-test before arriving at every class period. The instructors will do the same. If anyone tests positive – or feels ill – they will be expected to stay home. Due to the unpredictable nature of the current period, we reserve the right to reschedule, relocate or delay any part of the masterclass at any time.

Where do the classes meet?

We will meet and practice in two different venues. These venues are representative of different high-end environments. At the Adam Tower, we will meet in the Forbidden Garden. In Dam Square, we will meet in the former Mad Fox Club (currently known as Do Not Disturb). Additionally, we will visit another three venues where the ADJM might also be applied. All of the venues are close to the city center of Amsterdam.

What language is the course taught in?

The Masterclass is taught in English, and all handouts and written material will be presented in English.  Lars speaks both Dutch and English and can translate some more abstract concepts if necessary.

Which transportation options are available?

If you can get to Amsterdam Centraal Station, you can quickly get to any of the locations via public transportation. Traveling is also easy if you live in Amsterdam and bike to the venues. Driving & parking at the Adam Tower is easy. Parking near the Dam Square might cost a bit of money – but it is available.

What types of equipment will we work on?

We aim to give our students a chance to practice on several different types of equipment they might encounter in these sorts of environments. For the industry, this means Pioneer DJ equipment. By practicing in several venues, you will play on CDJ-2000’s and NX2 models – as well as a DJM-900 and DJM-900 NXS. Additionally, if available, we will let you practice on the XDJ-RX, the RX2, RX3, and the biggest all-in-one, the XDJ-XZ. Finally, we hope to have the newest CDJ-3000’s available, but sourcing these units is challenging due to supply constraints.

Which 'best DJs in the world' have played on this equipment?

Martin Garrix, David Guetta, Fedde Le Grand, Sunnery James & Ryan Marciano, Chus & Caballos, Erik Morillo (RIP), Sander Kleinenberg, Julian Jordan, Dante Klein, Roog, Lucky Charmes, Michael Mendoza, Leroy Styles, Nicola Zucchi, Camilo Franco, DJ Chuckie, Todd Terry, Sebastian Ingrosso, Black Coffee – we have surely forgotten some, and for this, we apologize.

Do we have to take notes?

You will receive some handouts during the group sessions to help you refresh your memory while at home. Further, you may find it helpful to make notes during the classes.

What is the music experience in ADAM VR?

ADAM VR is a virtual reality arcade located underneath the Adam Tower. We’ll go down and play a music-based virtual reality game that offers practice hitting things to the beat. Virtual Reality is just a bit of fun, but DJs should be well-practiced in hitting buttons on the beat!

What are Semiprivate Sessions?

Four out of the seven class periods are Semiprivate Sessions. You and another student will meet during these sessions on a Monday or a Tuesday for 2 hours. These will take place at two different venues and will be with one of the instructors.  These sessions  offer time a hands-on intensive study of the material.  You will typically be assigned a partner based on availability, but you can also enter the masterclass with a partner.

Do you have any options to practice more than just the planned practice sessions?

We are happy to arrange studio time to practice outside of the scheduled class periods. Depending on availability, we welcome any DJs regardless of whether they are currently enrolled in the ADJM.

Who is the surprise guest?

It is a surprise! We will arrange a Q&A with an artist from our industry who can provide a fresh perspective on making a living as a working DJ.

What is the Press Kit Photoshoot?

We will provide a photographer to take photos of the DJs during their final sets and other places in the venue for their press kits during the last session.

What does the 'final set' consist of?

The ‘final set’ is your final exam. It will take place during the fourth group class after the Q&A. Each student will prepare a 20-minute set based on the ADJM to play for the class. This set can also be a 40-minute set back to back with your partner. Based on this set, we will certify whether you have demonstrated a grasp of the ADJM.
